Rødne Fjord Cruise (sold by Arctic Resorts) · Tromsø harbour, Nerstranda
A big, fast catamaran leaves the harbour behind Nerstranda at 08:30 and sails north past the Lyngen Alps to wherever the orcas and humpbacks are feeding that week. Pick it if you want the simplest whale day from Tromsø: no dawn bus, a warm lounge, any age, and a free second trip if the whales stay away.

This is the trip most visitors book, with more than 3,700 reviews on GetYourGuide. It's sold by Arctic Resorts and sails on Rødne Fjord Cruise's two catamarans: MS Rygerdronningen, a large, stable boat that does close to 20 knots, takes the 08:30 departure with English and German guides; the smaller, faster MS Rygertroll takes the 09:00 departure with English and Italian guides. Both have a heated lounge with panoramic windows, several outdoor decks, a kiosk, Wi-Fi and toilets.
Be clear about the geography. The whales haven't fed next to Tromsø since about 2017; they follow the herring to the fjords around Skjervøy and Kvænangen, about two hours' sailing each way on these boats. On a 7 to 8 hour day that leaves roughly 1.5 to 2 hours in the whale area, including the search. The rest is the ride through the fjords, with the Lyngen Alps on the way and a talk on the whales. Book direct and Destination Tromsø lists it from NOK 2,095; on GetYourGuide it's from $197.
Two caveats. Food isn't included: coffee, tea and water are free, but anything else comes from the kiosk, and one guest found only chocolate bars and instant noodles on the way home. And the rail gets crowded when the whales show. The free second trip is real (book it at the Destination Tromsø Booking Point in the Prostneset terminal, subject to space), but it only helps if you have a spare day. Late in January, reviews describe sperm whales, porpoises or a fjord cruise instead of orcas.
Destination Tromsø emails a form for the maritime authorities. Fill it in, and keep the QR code they send the day before.
Both boats dock at the harbour behind the Nerstranda shopping centre. Scan your QR code at the boat.
The catamaran runs north at speed while the guide talks about the whales, the herring and local history.
The captain follows the latest sightings. Go out on deck when the guide calls a blow or a fin.
Warm up in the lounge. In the polar night it's dark by the time you dock, and some groups see the aurora on the way in.
★★★★★The boat trip to see the whales was simply beautiful; the scenery alone would have made the trip worthwhile. Once we arrived in the whale area, we were indeed able to observe orcas. The time allotted was ample, and there was plenty of space for everyone to get a good look.
★★★★★It was great, great experience, adrenaline and everything! We saw a few humpback whales, the guides and captains tried very hard for that! Hats off and Thank you!!
★★★★★We did see a sperm whale and it was incredible and the team was very good! I appreciated a lot the biology talks, very interesting!
★★★★★Despite the whale watching being cancelled we had an amazing fjord cruise, our guides were amazing, informative and passionate, thoroughly recommend despite no whales
