Booking choice: The high-speed catamaran safari, from $197 per person. Check dates Tour details

A whale watching day trip from Tromsø costs between $197 and $396 per person online for the 2026-27 season. Big boats from the city harbour sit at the bottom, at $197 to $261. Small-boat days at Skjervøy, with the bus, cost $334 to $396. An overnight cruise with a cabin and three meals is $441.

The prices below are the from-prices on GetYourGuide and Viator in October 2026, set against the kroner prices the operators publish on their own sites and on Visit Tromsø. Several kroner prices are last season's (2025-26), the latest the operators have published; expect this winter's to be the same or a little higher.

The quick answer

Big boats from central Tromsø cost $197 to $261, and the operators' own adult prices run from NOK 1,900 to NOK 2,500. A RIB or covered-boat day at Skjervøy with the bus costs $334 to $396. Per hour near the whales, the Skjervøy boats cost about the same as the catamarans, because they spend about twice as long among them.

How much does whale watching in Tromsø cost in 2026?

From $197 per person on a catamaran from the harbour to $396 for a RIB day at Skjervøy with the bus. The overnight cruise is $441.

Here is every whale trip on this site, cheapest first. Trip length includes the sailing or the bus, so the last column is the one to compare.

What does the price include?

Every boat includes the trip, a guide and either a heated lounge or a flotation suit. Food is where they differ most.

  • Full lunch: the all-inclusive safari (lunch, snacks, hot drinks and thermal suits), the Arctic Explorers RIB day (lunch), and the overnight cruise (dinner, breakfast and lunch).
  • A snack after the boat: the Skjervøy RIB day (hot drink and a sandwich), the Frozen Frontiers RIB (hot drink, sandwich and a muffin), and the heated boat (hot drinks and snacks).
  • Hot drinks only: the high-speed catamaran (coffee, tea and water, with a kiosk), the Helgøy catamaran (coffee, tea and hot chocolate, with a kiosk), and MS Alba (hot drinks and biscuits, and no food on sale, so bring a packed lunch).
  • Water only: Brim Explorer gives free tap water and sells pastries, sandwiches and soup in its cafe; MS Gabriele has a kiosk.
  • Warm gear: every RIB lends a flotation suit, boots, mittens and goggles. On the big boats you bring your own winter clothes, except on the all-inclusive trip, which lends thermal suits.

Eight hours on a boat with a coffee and nothing else is a long day. Count the cost of the kiosk, or pack food.

What does an hour near the whales cost?

About $100 to $210 on the big boats and $110 to $160 on the Skjervøy boats. The bus day costs more but buys more whale time.

We divided each from-price by the time near the whales that the operator gives, or that guests report. On a big boat most of the day is the sail there and back. On a Skjervøy boat nearly all the time on the water is in the whale area.

TourFromTime near the whalesPer hour
High-speed catamaran$1971.5 to 2 hours (guests report)$99 to $131
Heated boat at Skjervøy$3813 to 3.5 hours on the boat$109 to $127
Skjervøy RIB day$3342.5 to 3 hours on the RIB$111 to $134
Brim Explorer$2131 to 1.5 hours (operator)$142 to $213
Arctic Explorers RIB$396Up to 2.5 hours on the RIBFrom $158

Boat time is not the same as whale time. A RIB can spend half an hour finding the first pod, and one guest on another Skjervøy RIB day wrote that "we probably saw them for about a total of 10 minutes on a 12 hour day" (Miranda_S, Viator, December 2023). Big boats get lucky too: a Brim guest in January 2026 "basically had a solid hour of constant sightings". Treat these numbers as a guide to what you are paying for, not a promise.

Is it cheaper to book in NOK directly with the operator?

Rarely by much. Direct kroner prices land within about $20 of the online price, and the platforms add free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

The dollar has traded between about 9.15 and 10.14 kroner in 2026 (USD/NOK history), so a kroner price moves by up to $20 depending on the week. Side by side, for one adult:

Arctic Explorers, meet in SkjervøyNOK 2,600 to 3,400 by date, no bus$256 to $372$396 with the bus

The high-speed catamaran on GetYourGuide sails on MS Rygerdronningen and MS Rygertroll, the boats Rødne Fjord Cruise sells direct for NOK 1,995. Online it is the cheaper of the two at most exchange rates.

Where direct booking wins is children. Brim charged NOK 995 for ages 3 to 11 in 2025-26 and nothing under 3. Rødne charges NOK 998 for ages 4 to 15, with under-4s free. Helgøy listed NOK 950 for ages 4 to 12, and Polar Adventures charges NOK 2,300 for ages 5 to 12. Families should compare both before paying adult fares. Watch the terms too: Brim's direct tickets are refundable only if you cancel more than 48 hours ahead.

Why do Skjervøy RIB trips cost so much more?

You pay for about eight hours on a bus, one skipper per 12 guests and a full set of flotation gear. A big boat spreads one crew across 50 to 170 guests.

Doing it yourself does not save money on a day trip. The Whale Route bus from Tromsø to Skjervøy costs NOK 890 each way, and a RIB trip from Skjervøy harbour with Explore 70 Degrees costs NOK 1,890 for an adult (Visit Tromsø). That is NOK 3,670, or about $362 to $401, before a coffee. The Skjervøy RIB day with the bus, the suit and a sandwich is $334.

The package is cheaper because the bus is full and the gear room is already there. Doing it yourself only pays if you want to sleep in Skjervøy, take a later boat or do two trips. Our guide to Tromsø against Skjervøy covers that, and RIB or catamaran covers whether the open boat is right for you at all.

What extra costs should you budget for?

Food on most big boats, seasickness tablets, warm clothing if you lack it, and the Christmas surcharge.

  • Food: the cafes and kiosks on the big boats sell snacks and light meals; MS Alba sells nothing. On the Skjervøy days you get a sandwich after the boat, and the listing tells you to bring snacks for the bus.
  • Seasickness tablets: buy them at a pharmacy (apotek) in Tromsø the day before. MS Alba and the all-inclusive safari both list them as not included.
  • Warm clothes: big boats lend nothing. If you arrive without proper layers, Tromsø Outdoor in the city sells outdoor gear (Visit Tromsø).
  • The Christmas fortnight: Brim adds about 10% from 19 December to 4 January, and the Skjervøy self-arrival RIBs climb from NOK 2,600 to NOK 3,400.
  • Tips: optional. MS Alba lists gratuities as optional, which is the norm in Norway.

A second attempt is rarely a cost. Most big boats give you a free trip in the same season if you see no whales, if there is space. See what to wear before you buy anything new.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest whale watching tour from Tromsø?

The high-speed catamaran from $197 on GetYourGuide, followed by MS Gabriele from $209. Both leave from central Tromsø with no bus.

Do children pay less on whale watching tours?

Usually, especially if you book direct. Brim Explorer charged NOK 995 for children aged 3 to 11 in 2025-26 and nothing under 3; Rødne Fjord Cruise charges NOK 998 for ages 4 to 15. Most Skjervøy RIBs take no one under 14 or shorter than 140 cm.

Is the overnight whale cruise worth $441?

If you also want an aurora night, it replaces a hotel night, an aurora chase and a whale day with a private cabin and three meals. It is a 24-hour round trip and you need a passport or ID card on board.

Do I get my money back if we see no whales?

Usually not money. Most big boats give a free second trip in the same season if you see none, subject to space. Refunds come when the operator cancels, for weather or because the whales have left.
