Every winter the orcas and humpbacks off northern Norway follow one food source: Norwegian spring-spawning herring that spend the dark months packed into deep fjords. Where the herring settle decides where the boats go, how long the trip takes and how late in the season it still works.
This post collects what operators, Visit Tromsø and the Institute of Marine Research have published as of 8 October 2026. No one can tell you yet exactly where the whales will be in December. We can tell you what to watch for.
The quick answer
The big boats from Tromsø start in October 2026 and sell trips to 31 January 2027, but the reliable stretch is mid November to early January. Last winter the herring measured in the fjords around Kvænangen and Alta fell to 38% of the year before, and by late January many boats saw sperm whales or nothing. Book a date before about 10 January and put the whale trip early in your stay.
When does the 2026-27 whale watching season start in Tromsø?
The first boats sail in October and the operators sell trips to 31 January 2027. Visit Tromsø gives the usual season as early November to the end of January.
Operator calendars start early. Brim Explorer lists daily departures from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. Destination Tromsø, which sells the high-speed catamaran safari, says "From mid October to the end of January", with the first departure on 23 October. On GetYourGuide, that catamaran's Italian-guided 09:00 boat only runs from 1 December 2026.
Calendars are not whale forecasts. Visit Tromsø puts the season "from the beginning of November until the end of January" and adds that the timing shifts every year. October trips can work, and the first-week reports decide whether they do. If your dates are flexible, aim for mid November to early January, when the herring are settled and the boats know where to go.

Where will the herring winter in 2026-27?
No one knows yet. Last winter about two thirds of the herring skipped the Kvænangen area, and the researchers call the fish unpredictable.
Since the winter of 2017-18 the herring have wintered around Kvænangen and Skjervøy, which is why today's boats sail two hours or more north of Tromsø. In December 2025 the Institute of Marine Research (HI) measured about 780,000 tonnes of herring in the fjords of the area, against roughly two million tonnes a year earlier. The survey report splits it into about 340,000 tonnes in Altafjorden, 290,000 in the Kvænangen area and 150,000 in Sørøysundet, with none found in Lopphavet or outer Kvænangen.
HI's survey leader Erling Kåre Stenevik thinks much of the stock wintered at sea instead, and stresses that the herring stock itself is in good shape. His verdict: "Resultatet er uansett at silda er uforutsigbar" (the herring is unpredictable). HI published no forecast for this winter, and its next survey runs in December.
What this means for you: watch the first trip reports in November. If the herring sit in Kvænangen again, the boats from Tromsø work as usual. If they settle further out or further east, sailing times grow, and the Skjervøy RIB trips gain an edge. Our guide to Tromsø or Skjervøy compares the two set-ups.
| Area (HI survey, Dec 2025) | Herring, tonnes | What it means for tours |
|---|---|---|
| Altafjorden | About 340,000 | Further from Tromsø than Kvænangen |
| Kvænangen area | About 290,000 | The usual whale area since 2017 |
| Sørøysundet | About 150,000 | Older, larger fish |
| Total, Dec 2025 | About 780,000 | 38% of the year before |
| Total, Dec 2024 | About 2 million | A normal recent winter |
What happened at the end of the 2025-26 season?
The whales left early. From the last week of January, guests report sperm whales only, fjord cruises instead of whale trips, and 50% refunds.
The reviews tell the story better than any press release. On the Polar Adventures boat, Michel wrote on 31 January 2026: "At the end of January, the whales and orcas had already left with the herring. But we were able to admire adult male sperm whales up close." Rachael, on the Arctic Resorts catamaran a day earlier: "Despite the whale watching being cancelled we had an amazing fjord cruise".
In early February Helgøy Skyssbåt switched to shorter trips. Christophe wrote: "when the whales left, they offered a 3-hour excursion exploring the islands around Tromsø... and a 50% refund". On MS Gabriele, Thorben reported in mid February that "the whales had already left by the beginning of February", and the boat visited an island instead. Several January guests on the open-water days also mention rough seas and seasickness.
The operators handled it fairly: warnings a day or two ahead, a refund or a cheaper fjord trip. Still, nobody flies to the Arctic for a fjord cruise. Treat 20 January as the soft end of the season and anything after it as a bonus.

When should I book whale watching for winter 2026-27?
Book as soon as your flights are fixed, aim for 15 November to 10 January, and put the whale trip on your first or second day.
The whale trip is the one activity in Tromsø that depends on an animal's schedule, so give it room. Booking early costs nothing: every trip on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide or Viator. Booking direct can be stricter. Brim Explorer's own terms give a full refund only more than 48 hours ahead.
Put the trip at the start of your stay. Several boats offer a free second trip if you see no whales, and Destination Tromsø says its offer is "subject to available spaces and only applies for tours during winter season 2026/27". A second chance is worth nothing on your last day. Prices rise over Christmas too: Brim charges NOK 2,189 for adults from 11 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, against NOK 1,990 the rest of the season. Our price guide compares every boat.
| Travel dates | Whale odds | Our advice |
